For this project, I was inspired by this Michael Kors tote. I love everything “tromp-l’oeil”, I feel like it’s so whimsical and fun. A tote bag is pretty casual, so painting it to look like a handbag automatically upgrades it a bit without being the least bit serious! And, it’s so easy!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Clean canvas tote
- Acrylic/fabric paint in whatever colors you like (I had chocolate, tan, teal, red, and a buttery yellow)
- Acrylic/fabric paint pen, for detailing (I used black)
- Paintbrushes in various sizes (I used one thin and one thick brush)
First, draw your design using the pencil and ruler so you get nice, straight lines. I drew leather detailing and trim, pockets, a scarf, luggage tag, and tassel.
Once you have your design penciled, you can paint! I like doing all of the outlines with a thin brush first, then fill everything in with a thicker brush. Let everything dry for at least 1 hour before moving on.
Using your paint pen, add the small details. I added movement lines to the scarf and pockets, stitching on the leather trim, and studs on the bottom corners. Let the bag dry for 24 hours before using.
There you have it! See, I told you it was super simple. I loved the finished bag so much, that I got more totes in different colors and made a bunch to give to friends! Here are two of my finished bags:
